Most people say that the NFL is one of the easiest sports to bet on because there aren’t too many teams and the season isn’t very long. With each team playing on Sunday typically every week minus a couple games you can also cap each game on the Saturday before the games and it won’t take too much time out of your weekend. With other sports you need to cap almost everyday and it becomes difficult for some people to keep up with the teams, standings and stats. We’re going to go through some tips which will help out new cappers who want to bet on the NFL this upcoming season.
- Before the NFL season even begins you should spend a week to go through websites like NFL.com to find out what players were traded in the off-season and if there were any pick free agent pick ups. This off season has already seen some very impressive acquisitions and I suspect the teams who received the players will be a lot better to start off the new season. The draft is also important because you need to find out which teams drafted what players and if any of them will be starting the first week.
- Throughout the NFL season you need to keep up with the teams, standings, scores and stats each week. With every team playing on Sunday almost it’s really simple to keep a little chart with the score of each game which you can reflect on the following week when you’re making your bets. If a team blew the lead last week in the fourth quarter then you might want to ensure you don’t pick them the following week and the only way most of us will remember these things is if you write it down.
- The home teams in the NFL always have the advantage over the away team and you’re not going to find many games where the teams are playing on even ground. There are a couple games a year where the teams will play on neutral ground, but that’s about it. Throughout the season the visitor team will win a lot of games, but you should always be weary of betting on a road favourite. I’ve seen the worst teams in the NFL win games against the best teams many times while playing at home. An example of a bad team who plays very well at home is Kansas City.
- Always try and stay away from spreads that are more then -7. You don’t really want to bet on teams that need to win by more then a touchdown when playing point spread because often they will disappoint you at the end of the game. These teams will cover the spread sometime, but they will also give up points at the end of some games because the point spread doesn’t matter to them. They don’t care if they win by 3 or 10 so they aren’t too worried about giving up a late touchdown near the end of the game when they’re up by 10.
